The office handbook

The office is easily a show that is seen as  a cult classic in the realm of television sitcoms.  However it is obvious to anyone fan of the show that the office in “The Office” is not a environment meant to be conducive to productivity despite of the success of the Dundermifflin branch. This ever apparent disrespect for the traditional work environment is why I feel as though a multitude of the episodes can be used to build a handbook of prohibited behavior.

The princess and the complete waste of time.

The Disney film “the Princess and the Frog” we are given our first black disney princess, however her story differs in many ways beyound just her skin color. The prince in which she is given to fall in love with is anything but charming and is instead a very lazy and entitled person. it is clear early on that the prince is more concerned with his fortune and his ability to use it to capture the attention of young women. So when faced with the challenge of being transformed into frog, he simply attaches himself o the female protagonist, while still trying to place himself on a petosal and minimize his faluts. This story can easily be transformed into a cautionary tale for women in the form a fu#k boy storytime.

The Ways In Which You Can Improve: Instructional Films

As the youth within our modern society continue to grow more consumed with their self-image with the passing of every generation, they are also plagued with the heavy load that is finding their place in the world as they mature. This obsession with self-perfection within one’s youth commonly coincides with the stress of navigating the onslaught of decisions and responsibility the will inevitably befall them.  Many educational institutions of today feel the need to intervene in these situations and put lessons in place that promote self-love and individuality, many times in the form of visual media. However, this is not a new tactic that many modern schools are only now discovering if we look back at how the stresses of teens growing up where handle in the past we will see a very similar approach to this problem. After the 1940’s it had become common for educational documentary filmmakers to produce instructional films that would detail the protocol needed in different situations to meet the expectations or values being presented in the film.  What has changed, however, are the types of behaviors and ways of thought that were taught in this visual media regarding self-image. With these films as an example, it is simple to see as to where these preoccupations with self-image developed and how these films played a role in manipulating the thoughts of children to highly value and yearn for societal approval.

The purpose of the films was to educate youth on the several societal expectations they might face as they fall into adulthood, as well as, to ensure that these expectations were to be held on to and passed down generationally. Which, in this selfie obsessed and the self-comparative world, it is easy to see how they have succeeded in this endeavor in unexpected ways. The idea that the many companies felt the need to produce instructional films to guide young people on the extremely high standard in which they are to consistently adhere to directly the shows the rigidity and uniformity pertaining to the expectations surrounding adult life within this time period. The motivation of the lifestyle seemed to center around the need to conform, presenting one’s best self only in ways that were deemed acceptable.  And the best way for youth to successfully learn to conform was to teach the importance of developing personal disciplines that would aid youth in making acceptable decisions that they may anticipate to make as they mature.

The purpose of this paper is to explore three ways in which the youth of this time period were taught to develop the personal disciplines required to have what was believed to be a happy life that, even more importantly,  fits into the formalities of the current status quo. The manufacturers of academic aids saw the development of these “required disciplines” as an opportunity to create films detailing the specific expected behavior of the youth as they grew into young adults.   These lessons included: training to improve your personality to better suit common social situations, maintaining a tidy, and fashionable appearance, as well as managing healthy friendships and romantic relationships. This paper will ultimately explain the relationship between these three personal disciplines and what this time’s society had deemed as significant in regard to learning the art of living, finding where one belonged in the world. This paper will also explore the relationship between modern societies perspective on self-image versus the perspective held at the time these instructional films were made.

Identify and Describe Patterns in the Genre’s Features

What content is typically included or excluded? How is the content treated? What sorts of examples are used? What counts as evidence (personal testimony, facts, etc.)?

Content that is excluded if there are any positive outcomes are to be assumed to follow if the protagonist were to not follow the advice given in the films. The films give the protagonist a slanted or one sided view point what actually may happen if a young person were to learn to navigate the adult world on their own and not make use of the instructions provided in the film.

The films typically include a series of scenes where the protagonist is introduced and placed in a setting where they are forced to engage in a social situation. The narrator then announces to the audience the significance of the actions the protagonist are preforming because they are the actions deemed as correct. If the protagonist is not seen implementing these correct behaviors the audience is then taught how this only harms the protagonist through a demonstration on screen of a negative outcome.

What rhetorical appeals are used? What appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos appear?

The rhetorical appeals used are most definitely these demonstrations of extreme hyperbole. Only if the protagonists followed the instructions presented would their paths lead to success or happiness. The life of the protagonist would take on aspects of what would have been seen a s a idolized life. If the protagonist ever did not do as instructed their actions were literally presented as harshly as possible. The actors purposefully portrayed these characters as immature or rude instead of incredibly likable and polite. The appeal was the hyperbole used when presenting each path and the foreseeable outcomes as such favorable or unfortunate lives.

How are texts in the genres structured? What are their parts, and how are they organized?

There id the introduction of the protagonist followed by the introduction of the social setting, personal responsibility, or societal expectation to be conquered through the use of correct etiquette or a set of beliefs to obtain. We the audience watch the protagonist work their way through the predetermined lesson and see whether they succeed by following the advice voiced in the film or fail by making their own choices.

In what format are texts of this genre presented? What layout or appearance is common? How long/big is a typical text in this genre?

The content is primarily presented in short films.

What types of sentences do texts in the genre typically use? How long are they? Are they simple or complex, passive or active? Are the sentences varied? Do they share a certain style?

The context of the material was primarily provided in the form of short films with youth showcasing proper behaviors to be taught to other youth. The films were shown in schools and youth groups. The instructional films would often over-cross with other genres such as: romance, relationships, finances, and one’s appearance. This is because the films are used to guide youth regarding a multitude of areas of difficulty they may face.

The audience is looking to find a sort of “cheat sheet” of knowledge obtaining to the best ways to conduct themselves in a various set of crucial or even mundane circumstances. It could be believed that with the heightened importance to social etiquette at the time many young people found it stressful to handle expectations placed on them as the became accustomed to the ways of adult life. The makers of these films felt the need to fill in the holes within the knowledge of social etiquette for these youth as a way to lessen the stress they face as they age and mature.  These films can also serve the purpose of providing a way of directly comparing modern views on social customs and expectations with the customs and expectations of the past
