As i assume everyone knows, memes can be found almost anywhere nowadays. Flipping through your favorite social media apps, sent amongst friends and family, or even used as advertisements. Memes are used as a form of comedy that can bring light to political issues, well known scandals, advertise businesses, and of course their original intent is simply making people laugh. Id like to pick a few memes meant to be simple and write a description digging into the meanings behind them that may not be seen at face value.

Food packaging labels: An in depth look at the influence of labels

Found in grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and even our own homes, food packaging labels are seen by billions every day. It is easy not to appreciate the thought that goes into the creation of these food packaging labels since we are so accustomed to coming across them on a daily basis. Food packaging labels have a great influence on the types and brands of food people are purchasing, and thus the food that they eat. Labels are made to draw in consumers. Picking the item up off the shelf is the first step to becoming a successful company. Once the shopper has a hold of the item a quick glance will reveal the contents of the item. Many tactics are used to draw in consumers through creative tactics. Food packaging labels can be made to reach out to particular audiences or made to appeal to the masses.

This paper aims to dig into the tactics used in the creation of a food packaging label. We will look into the psychology of the process that makes them so effective. We will understand the process of the actual creation, design, and content of labels. This paper will show the huge amount of thought that goes into the making from start to finish. This is important to understand as anyone that has been to a store in their life has encountered this very underappreciated genre. With anyone being a potential audience member it is important to know the ways that we are targeted. This can help to ensure that no one is deceived by a label because of its content. It is good to realize the ways that companies are able to target and subconsciously convince us to purchase something we otherwise may not have considered purchasing were it not for the food packaging label.

Subject: Facts are placed on food packaging labels

POS: Facts are used to inform consumers about the company or even about the food its self

Subject: Pictures are used on food packaging labels:

POS: By placing a picture on a label, companies are able to more easily grab the attention of consumers.

Subject: Name of products on food packaging labels

POS: Some items are simply named “green beans” which clearly tells us what is within the packaging. Some products are given obscure names such as ho ho’s ore Twinkies.

Subject: Food packaging labels can be placed separately onto packaging or be the container its self

POS: A can of veggies has a label stuck to the metal can whereas in the case of a bag of chips, the food packaging label and the actual packaging are one thing, which would be a bag, that is labeled.

  1. B) Overreaching subject/ POS

There are many different ways that food is packaged and labeled depending on the particular audience that the product is looking to reach out to

  1. C) Question/ Prompt

What type of food packaging labels work best to grab the attention of consumers and overall convince them to buy the product?

Found almost anywhere including grocery stores, gas stations, vending machines and even our homes, food packaging labels are quite simply labels used to draw the attention of consumers, drive sales and build a brands recognition. Food packaging labels are similar to other packing labels but they contain information about the food that is about to enter our bodies. They convince us whether or not this is the right product to consume. Food packaging labels are used by companies to inform and convince consumers to buy the product. When food packaging labels are used, they attract more views and potential sales. Consumers walk through grocery stores browsing food items, purchasing those that appeal most to their taste, lifestyle, and moral values.

Identify and Describe Patterns in the Genre’s Features

  1. What content is typically included or excluded? How is the content treated? What sorts of examples are used? What counts as evidence (personal testimony, facts, etc.)?

… There are all sorts of strategies for food labeling. Some decide to add facts if the item is healthy and also depending on the audience they are aiming for. Some use a simple one syllable word such as YUM. There are even testimonies for food labeling about how someone lost weight or lowered their cholesterol or something like that . Some labels even just simply have an enlarged exaggerated photo of the food simply writing the name of the product which sometime is creative like fruit loops for example, and then the label for the can of corn will just say corn.

  1. What rhetorical appeals are used? What appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos appear?

…Logos is used in many food labeling situations. The company will simply say hey, this butter is low fat, so if you are on a low fat diet, you will buy the low fat butter. Another example would be a cereal throwing the vitamin content on the front of the box. If you are looking for something healthy or u are malnourished and your doctor tells you to eat more of those types of vitamins you will logically make the choice to buy the product. Pathos is used again in the example of cereals, either showing a testimony of some old guy that had heart disease and now eats cheerios ever morning claiming it saved his life. If some cute lil old person tells you it saved their life you are going to feel for them and believe it. Ethos is also used all the time. Again going back to cereal, frosted flakes is always showing their involvement in the community and helping out the children. Maybe the box say that the company donates X amount of money to this cause or whatever.

  1. How are texts in the genres structured? What are their parts, and how are they organized?

… There really isn’t a structure for this sort of genre. There is typically a spot to put the name of the particular product, typically that is a given. Anything else could be put anywhere on the packaging. Again, we simply have facts, just a single word, a testimony, some sort of tidbit about what the company does, etc…

  1. In what format are texts of this genre presented? What layout or appearance is common? How long/big is a typical text in this genre?

… The format just depends on the food item that you buy. Boxes, cans, bags, etc…

  1. What types of “sentences” do texts in the genre typically use? How long are they? Are they simple or complex, passive or active? Are the sentences varied? Do they share a certain style?

…Much of the time you may have one sentence on there giving you a bit about the product. Sometimes there are no sentences at all. You might have to little catch phrase written on there for that particular product. It is also possible the sentence is simply stating a fact.

  1. What diction is most common? What types of words (or symbols, images, etc.) are most frequent? Is a type of jargon used? Is slang used? How would you describe a typical writer’s tone?

… On food packaging there is a mixture of symbols, images, wording, etc… Sometimes it is clearly written out and sometimes they use play on words or cute little sentences to grab your attention. The writers tone can be straight to the point like this is a bag of potatoes, or it may be trying to convince you like hey, buy me, I taste good and I might just also be healthy.

Analyze What These Patterns Reveal About the Situation and Scene

  1. What do these patterns reveal about the genre, its situation, and the people who use it?

… It reveals that there are some things that clearly need creative labels to grab attention and convince people to give the product a try. There are however, some items that do not require any creativity. These are the essential items. How many times have you seen milk or eggs trying to convince you to buy them on the label. It says what it is, how much or how many, and gives the name of the company that supplies it to you. Other things such as sweets need to convince you like hey cmon, im not really good for you at all but just buy me.

  • What do participants have to know or believe to understand or appreciate the genre?

… People have to know what they want to begin with and the label should help them to make that decision. Of course, again, there are some things we don’t need that we end up buying because some creative label convinced us that we need it .

  • Who is invited into the genre, and who is excluded??

… everyone is invited into this genre assuming you have ever been anywhere that sells anything.

  • What roles for writers and readers does it encourage or discourage?

… It encourages creativity in some situations, in others transparency, but of course it can occasionally be misleading.

  1. What can you learn about the actions being performed through the genre by observing its language patterns?

… You can figure out who the particular product is aimed towards, such as which consumers, which age groups, sometimes even male or female.

  • How is the subject of the genre treated? What content is considered most important? What content (topics or details) is ignored?

… it again depends on the product being presented, if the product is healthy or unhealthy, or if it is one of the essentials. In some things simply the name of the product is all that needs to be thrown on there along with a nice picture of whatever the packaging contains. So a pack of cosmic brownies is not going to say like ooh only 6843 carbs in one brownie, but a box of Atkins bars will tell you like hey look only 3 carbs.

  • What values, beliefs, goals, and assumptions are revealed through the genre’s patterns?

… If the company chose to add some information about themselves we can occasionally find out about their beliefs and values, they add info about where they help out or donate money, what they goals are in making the product in the first place etc…

  • What actions does the genre enable? What actions does the genre constrain??

… Basically just enables consumers to figure out what a product is, what is contains, what it looks like, what the purpose of buying it is for, etc… does not really constrain unless it is a bad label.

Introduce Your Genre

  1. Identify your tentative “underappreciated” genre (or subgenre)

… The labeling on packaging (only food/drink at the moment), not totally set.

  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?

… -I realize that many times I have found myself standing in the grocery store trying to decide on one brand of food or the other.

-Much of the time, without realizing it, I am choosing food based on which one has the more appealing packaging, or describes its contest better than the competitor

-Does the packaging help guide us in the right direction or is it actually misleading?

  1. Tentatively, define/describe your corpus (collection of texts/examples)

…The examples I have provided below show the range of different techniques used by in packaging. We see the cereals the aim to be sweet, crunchy, and made with real reesee peanut butter. We can then see the cheerios which boldly claims to lower cholesterol and lower risk of heart disease. There are also examples of free range “happy eggs” to make people feel better about eating eggs. There is also an example of vegetables that show a big old organic sign on them to draw the middle aged ladies over. Everything is geared toward a certain audience and attract them as such.

  1. Provide links (and/or titles) of five samples. (Try to gather samples from more than one “place” [or type] in order to obtain a diverse and accurate representation of the genre. For now, choose samples without significant deviations).

Describe the Context

  1. Setting: Where (in what context or medium) does the genre appear? How and when is it used? With what other genres does this genre interact? How?

… Most commonly we could expect to see this genre at play at any given grocery store. It is used daily by everyone without really even noticing. Every item we purchase nowadays has some sort of packaging that was made purposefully to draw the attention of consumers. Attract the consumer, then once they pick the item up they are further drawn to purchase after reading the wording specifically chosen for that product .

  1. Subject: What topics, issues, ideas, etc. are common to this genre? When people use this genre, what are they communicating about?

… People are trying to communicate one common thing with packaging, and that would basically be please buy me, I am good. Depending on the product, there are different messages being delivered. For some people, they like to read that eggs or meat have come from free range, grass fed animals that get massages once a week, so there is packaging geared towards those types of people. Some people don’t care what they shove in their mouth so they are looking through boxes for words more like YUM or SWEET or CHOCOLATELY or some sort of big bold word on a box that appeals to their particular tastes. Some things have a full description and some, as stated before, will simply just choose to throw up one big bold word. Why does that work for some things and not others? A can of green beans I’d just looked at gave a fact about the percentage of both adults and children that fail to meet their daily vegetable consumption for the day.

  1. Writers: Who writes the texts in this genre? Are multiple writers possible? What roles do they perform? What characteristics must writers of this genre possess? Under what circumstances do writers write the genre (e.g., in teams, on a computer, in a rush, for their profession? for fun?)?

…There is a demand in any company to have a good advertising/marketing team working to get their products sold. Companies look to pay people in order to attract more customers and have them choose their product over the others. I am sure most larger sized companies have an entire team sitting around thinking of clever ideas for packaging. This is of course done on a computer as it needs to be printed and created quickly. These writers must be able to pick the most important aspects of the item that they believe should be described on the packaging. They must choose what will be written based on audience. So for example we have reeses puffs cereal that says sweet, and crunchy, and mentions that it uses real reeses peanut butter. Then we have cheerios that claims to reduce heart issues. Must be able to analyze audience and write based on what they want.

  1. Readers: Who reads the texts in this genre? Is there more than one type of reader for this genre? What roles do they perform? What characteristics must readers of this genre possess? Under what circumstances do readers read the genre (e.g., at their leisure, on the run, in waiting rooms)?

…As mentioned above, the readers are the consumers, they are basically any human being alive short of those in remote villages. If anyone has ever left their house they are sure to have seen food labels. Without the readers there would be no reason to make a creative label. If brands of items were simply chosen at random and no one read the labels there would be no purpose. This is not read in leisure but can sometimes provide for a very short, but sometimes interesting read. Could possibly learn a fact or two.

  1. Exigency/Purpose(s): Why do writers write this genre, and why do readers read it? What purposes does the genre fulfill for the people who use it?

…The genre of food labels helps readers decide which food they will buy. It can be hard to decide between two different options just by looking at them. If you get some creative writing on the labels it is much easier to convince someone to purchase that product. The genre should fulfill your need for information about the product if needed, its contents, maybe a bit about the people who make/produce the product, where its from, etc…
