  1. What contentis typically included or excluded? How is the content treated? What sorts of examples are used? What counts as evidence (personal testimony, facts, etc.)?
  • Typically, the content included is anything from a crazy story, to a holy grail product, to an entertainment piece. However, all of these contents will usually share a common theme which is over exaggeration. Click bait exaggerates or completely goes away from the topic in order to draw the audience in

2. What rhetorical appealsare used? What appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos appear?

  • I have found that any and all rhetorical appeals can be used in click bait
  • Ethos: “This face wash is a MUST have.

Introduce Your Genre

  1. Identify your tentative “underappreciated” genre (or subgenre)

The genre I want to introduce is the words on the movie poster.

  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?

The plot of a movie is very long, and the movie poster must have a few short words to summarize the whole movie. So the words on the movie poster is very important.

  1. Tentatively, define/describe your corpus (collection of texts/examples)

Most of the words on the movie poster use the simplest words, homonyms or numbers. But the producer can achieve the purpose of summarizing the movie through the change of the font. [...]

Identify and Describe Patterns in the Genre’s Features
  1. What content is typically included or excluded? How is the content treated? What sorts of examples are used? What counts as evidence (personal testimony, facts, etc.)?

Evidence in this genre is lacking. The rhetoric behind these ads is based exclusively on the ethos and pathos in the next question. So, the closes thing to evidence is the promise of the appealed lifestyle by the commercial’s protagonist, as they are indeed riding horses and laying on the beach and so can you. All the content is cinematic shots, vague plot progression, hushed voiceovers, and the product reveal at the end of the commercial.

  1. What rhetorical appeals are used?

  • Expensive Home Tours
  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?
  • Expensive home tours allow people who can’t afford to tour or live in the pricey mansions to look in awe at the luxurious houses.
  1. Tentatively, define/describe your corpus (collection of texts/examples)
  • My collection of samples are videos of home tours that are price at $1,000,000 and more. They’re usually at least 10 minutes long, and capture are a good range of different style homes.

Identify and Describe Patterns in the Genre’s Features

  1. What content is typically included or excluded? How is the content treated? What sorts of examples are used? What counts as evidence (personal testimony, facts, etc.)?

… There are all sorts of strategies for food labeling. Some decide to add facts if the item is healthy and also depending on the audience they are aiming for. Some use a simple one syllable word such as YUM. There are even testimonies for food labeling about how someone lost weight or lowered their cholesterol or something like that . Some labels even just simply have an enlarged exaggerated photo of the food simply writing the name of the product which sometime is creative like fruit loops for example, and then the label for the can of corn will just say corn. IDENTIFY PATTERNS:

  1. Inclusion/Exclusion: In this particular genre, content is usually loosely defined. It has to be a piece of paper or plastic with words on it. Sizing down the genre to children’s cards reveals the common pattern of using bright or pleasing colors, and the words written inside are in reference to the reader (i.e. “you, we, us”). Moving further, within the genre of birthday cards for children, there must be mention of the occasion. The inside of the card does not require anything but words, but often the outside contains a cartoon or a graphic. Cards that are typically singled-out are those that use stickers, included prizes, pop-up book technology (no idea how to describe that, sorry), audio recordings or music.

Kid Toy Unboxing Videos
2. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?
Since its conception under the YouTube platform, the amount of views and revenue accrued from these videos conceptualizes the relationship between content creators and a viable audience that hasn’t been realized.
3. Tentatively, define/describe your corpus (collection of texts/examples)
From collective research on YouTube, and a cursive search through the internet for reputable reviews and analyses of this genre and its growing influence over an incumbent generation of toddlers and adolescents, its not going anywhere. They describe children and/or the family being filmed while they are experiencing unopened toys and/or kids’ related products. [...]

… The double meaning of nursery rhymes.

  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?

… As kid’s we are introduced into literacy through nursery rhymes thinking they are these cute plots/characters/settings/ideas but after researching a bit I find that most of these stories are messed up. Parents prevent their kids from watching and playing violent and sexually active videogames but ironically are okay with children reading, repeating and making games to these these nursery rhymes which hold the same meaning behind them.

  1. Tentatively, define/describe your corpus (collection of texts/examples)

… Pop goes the weasel is technically about how the poor have to pawn their clothing in order to buy food or drink

London bridge is an obvious one where the Vikings attacked Norway and destroyed the bridge during the attack

Ring around the rosie was about the plague “ashes” or “a-tishoo” and falling down was supposed to mimic sneezing and eventually dying from the disease

Click bait… I’ve noticed that click bait is everywhere, not just in things like YouTube videos. Click bait is even incorporated in news articles and stories. Even crazy store discounts such as “Entire store 50% off”, and then when you go in the store it ends up being most things 50% off, but not all. Also, weight loss “magic” supplements that say you’ll lose 20 pounds in one week, or something not realistic, just to make you buy their product. Click bait is literally everywhere.

Underappreciated Genre: Skincare Commercials/Ads

Introduce Your Genre

  1. Identify your tentative “underappreciated” genre (or subgenre)
  • Acne Product Commercials/Advertisements
  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?
  • It’s interesting how most of these ads/commercials will use a celebrity to sell the product. And also how they’ll show how the acne product has worked for other people even though you can tell the people in the advertisement or in the commercial have make-up on. So, how do you know if the product has actually worked for them?
  • It’s worth paying attention to because it’s sold to viewers as in you’ll only be pretty if you’re skin is flawless and encourages people with acne to feel insecure about their looks.

Inspirational/Motivational home décor sayings

  1. What is interesting to you about this genre? Or, why might it be significant or otherwise worth paying attention to?

Its intended purpose versus its actual impact; is it bought necessarily for self-uplifting purposes or is it an image preserver/painter? Is it for the buyer to see or the guests to judge the buyer’s ethics? Does it actually make an inspirational impact on anyone or the guise of the “glass half-full” persona? Do words even count as décor? What do they say versus what do they imply about the buyer? Does anyone actually buy this bullshit– like honest to God believe what they’re saying? [...]

Birthday Cards, Ages 1-5 (#1)

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Genre/Subgenre:  Cards meant for children ages 1-5, pre-reading age.
  2. Interest: These kids can’t read. Why the hell do we feel the need to give them useless bits of paper with witty phrases on them if they’re not going to understand them? Half of them use a pun based on the number they’ve aged up to, and I know that when I was that age, I was too dumb to understand what a pun was, let alone why it’d be funny.
  3. Corpus: Birthday cards, Hallmark cards, off-brand cards in a similarly cartoonish style. Pop-up cards, singing cards and sticker cards are exceptions in this genre, but their presence does show that the card business is trying to expand.
