Making Visual Arguments
Conventions of Visual Perception
(or, “Common Sense”)

The eight conventions of visual perception are based on physiology of reading and (in part) the Gutenberg Diagram (pictured right).
- Left to Right (in Western cultures)
- Top to Bottom
- Foreground/background
- Large/smaller
- Thick/thin
- Activity/non-activity
- Related items are grouped
- Use of contrast “highlights” items
C.R.A.P.
contrast | repetition | alignment | proximity
