Conventions of Visual Perception

(or, “Common Sense”)
gutenbergdiagram

The eight conventions of visual perception are based on physiology of reading and (in part) the Gutenberg Diagram (pictured right).

  1. Left to Right (in Western cultures)
  2. Top to Bottom
  3. Foreground/background
  4. Large/smaller
  5. Thick/thin
  6. Activity/non-activity
  7. Related items are grouped
  8. Use of contrast “highlights” items
