According to my group last Friday my proposal was ok. Someone suggested that I should elaborate more on the topic but I feel like I am running out of things to write about. I think I have enough information to proceed with my paper, I feel like I have wrote these drafts in so many different ways that I have enough information to write 8 pages. So I hope. At this point I think I will just work with what I have because it is kind of too late to start everything over again.

For years, millions of people have looked up to Superman as the epitome of human and moral perfection. Countless scholars and fans have claimed that the character is an allegory for Jesus while others believe him to be a Moses allegory. However, during his inception, creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster drew inspiration from a variety of sources, ranging from religion to Greek mythology to science fiction pulp magazines, and novels like Philip Wylie’s Gladiator. Regardless of the character’s potential for interpretation, his adventures in the comic books, films, and numerous television shows have become their own sort of religious text, with readers and viewers clinging heavily to established canon as indisputable fact. The character’s adventures and morality have further been used to reshape peoples’ way of living life, as well as prompting many to pursue lines of work that they previously would not have considered without the character’s influence.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which Superman’s tales of triumph in the struggle of good versus evil have generated a devout fan following and initiated discussions of allegorical meaning. Further, this paper will seek to examine the myriad sources from which the character of Superman was derived. Finally, this paper will argue that Superman and his lore have created a new type of mythology, and remolded The Man of Steel into a modern day god on par with ancient mythological and biblical heroes such as Samson and Hercules.

Every Little Boy is a Superhero… Every Little Girl is a Princess

Do children’s toys hold on to old gender stereotypes and encourage them? OR is biased still present and that’s why they’re created in the first place?  In my essay I’m going to discuss children’s toys and activities, and how they shape the child as they age.

Identify- Children’s toys commit stereotypes to gender. Are these stereotypes outdated? Do we get these toys because our culture expects us to? Is it better to raise children gender neutral? Is it better to raise them as culture expects so they are normalized while interacting with other children? Mirror as cultural artifact for girls. Bruises and cuts as cultural artifact for boys. Rugged. Girls expected to be dainty and care about appearance. Boys’ bruises are typical rowdy behavior. “Be more lady like”. Parents and psychologists have opinions about which methods are best. As a nanny I have my own opinions also. The central idea is whether raising the children with gendered upbringing is beneficial or not.

These are the ideas I’ll be exploring. The sources I’ll be using are from parent-posted articles, psychology articles, and experience. Just like the example touches upon media and gender roles, I’m doing the same with toys. Do children’s toys continue old gender norms? Also, when people raise children, is it best to do so in traditional roles or is it our job to encourage free choice in children?

Not every little boy reaches for a truck, and not every little girl’s favorite play time is dress up. Playtime is considered a necessity for the development of children’s brains, but it’s also about what they play with. Their toys shape their perspective of the world, as well as to help the child develop a sense of self.

Several parenting styles are being used in our society, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful. Each differs from one another. Each of them affect a child differently, depending on the child’s personality.

Also several factors such as socio-economic status and the parent’s personality can lead to ineffective parenting. If the parent was raised by an abusive parent it can also cause the parent to e abusive as well.

As the world continues to shrink at an exponential rate due to the increasing accessibility of the internet and global transportation, the idea of organized religion may be something that we as humans need to put behind us. Whether dealing with social issues such as same-sex marriage or issues involving global politics such as the unrest in the Middle East, organized religion is perpetuating intolerance among people of different upbringings and attempting to discredit scientific advancements. The topic has been debated by scholars of scripture, philosophy, and science since the beginnings of religion.

In order to really delve into this topic, this paper is going to distinguish between personal faith and organized religion, address the social and political implications of organized religion, and examine why it’s dangerous to cherry-pick beliefs from Holy Scripture. Ultimately, this paper will argue that organized religion is severely detrimental due to semantics. People who are inherently good will find the good in whatever they practice, and vice versa.

MAKEUP YOUR MIND:

How Makeup is Evolving Socially, Culturally, and Technically

Makeup is constantly evolving when it comes to social media, its surround with culture, and the technical side of makeup as well. Makeup in general has changed the way people are changing themselves. The way people talk about makeup on social media sites such as Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest, and many more. Culturally, makeup has evolved surrounding pop culture such as movies and famous people. Makeup is being made to match the movies and famous people that everyday people idolize. Makeup is becoming more technical not just in a technology aspect but also in a manner of application and tools that are being used.

TOPIC LOCATE THE TOPIC POSITION

Makeup is a topic that is not necessarily important for everyone to jump on board and learn about, but it is a topic that should be brought to the attention of people who have interest in learning more about how makeup is constantly changing the way people look, view things, and feel. Makeup helps people feel good about themselves but can also backfire from how people view the way that person is wearing makeup or how much. Socially, thousands of people are viewing many videos every day to see, “what the next big thing is.” Culturally, makeup is beginning to be sold in pallets of different colors that match the famous people that non-famous people idolize as well as movies that people love. Makeup tools are changing their shapes and the way that they are used. New inventions are occurring for easier makeup application as well as faster makeup application.

A Question for the Second Millennium

With our living in an era of world history whereas yet no human has visited a celestial body beyond Earth besides our moon, some very fundamental questions are raised about the nature of a foreign planets’ reality. This is not to suggest that the planets themselves do not exist or are not real, but rather is meant to raise the question of whether or not the divergence between the Saturn as we conceive of it and Saturn as it really is has any serious implications philosophically, historically and/or sociologically. The historical practice of giving credence to a conception of what a place is rather than submitting to a critical analysis of place’s nature has had impacts that, significant or not, have had lasting implications today. One of the less historically significant but perhaps more illustrative examples is the continued use of the word Indian to refer to Native Americans who were once for a short while believed to be of the Indian subcontinent. A more powerful and historically significant example can be found in the misguided assumption of European visitors to Africa that the race they found there truly was inferior and thus enslaving them was not abominable.

Historically, the divergence between truth and a sociological construct of truth has had implications and despite the lack of native populations on foreign celestial bodies, the divergence between our imagined concept of a planet and the planet we’ll someday visit must have implications for the visitors in one sense or another. Psychologically, what will be the expense of living or working on a planet or moon which no human has touched, seen or experienced in all of history? Will the new environment be more new and therefore alien than the visitors could have imagined with the current imaginary toolkit given to us by our lives on Earth? But the question’s not just important in terms of what may or may not befall our race’s future explorers, but is of very real significance today because it illuminates our species’ situation as one in which there is a finite reality we can experience as a people limited to a singular world. Understanding that the universe is larger than ourselves in terms of not only size and scope but in terms of what realities are and are not truly available to us is important in formulating an understanding of who we are as a people and more importantly what discoveries will be open to future generations, provided we make an effort today to provide those future generations with the infrastructure to explore space and the universe.

damn there’s a lot of haterzzz.

Paper Proposal

Let the Greats be Great, Dammit.

Social media has completely ruined any kind of artistic capability celebrities have perfected and chose to release to the world.  Why do I say this?  No matter who, what, when, where, or why, some celebrity when they release any body of work someone has to negatively critique or shame it.  What makes us even half as qualified to say anything about their work.  They are famous, we are not.  They are rich, we are not.  They are talented, because if they were they wouldn’t be where they are now in their career.  Of course, I’m not talking about upcoming artists who still need to find their voices, but the celebrities that have a solidified spot in pop culture.  Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Carrie Underwood, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, these, among many others, have dedicated their life to making music, selling it, and being great at what they do, they have become staples in Pop Culture.  This paper will cover not only cover how social media has begun to destroy pop culture as well as create it, but also cover the topic of how redundant, boring, unnecessary, and tiring it is to hear about people’s negative comments about these celebrities and the things they do and the art they release.

This effects each and every one of us whether you realize it or not.  We all have our favorites when it comes to music, whether we like them because of the genre they fall under or they have a nice voice/flow, or maybe we just like the song and that’s the extent of it.  Music has always been something people have found as a savior or an escape route from it.  We form bonds with our favorite celebrities, and of course they don’t know each of us by name, but we still love them regardless.  My favorite celebrity is Nicki Minaj, and quite frankly, I’m tired.  Tired of the bashing, name calling, discrediting, and comparisons, all of it.  Why can she just not be great and what she does and move on.  All these celebrities receive the same treatment.  It’s time that we as a society stop bashing these artists and dragging them through the mud not only because it doesn’t do anything but piss people off who support these celebrities, but it’s annoying, plus, there are more important things that we can focus our thoughts on that will better us as a society, and much more, as a generation.

In the ever-growing video game industry of present times, game producers continually seek to change things up, devising fresh plots and new gameplay in order to stay competitive. As is the case within the Kingdom Hearts franchise, this reach to be unconventional can often times leave fans with muddy understanding of what the game and its plot are meant to be. Despite this, the popularity of the franchise continues to rise, which brings to thought that perhaps a clear-cut plot is not always essential to the success of a video game, but success can lie in relatable characters and meaningful music that can regularly pull at nostalgia and keep fans loyal.

Kingdom Hearts’ loyal fans are quick to point out that the franchise takes them back to their childhood. Except, most of these fans are about to or have barely graduated college. Childhood is not so far behind. The games in the franchise cater to nostalgia, with interactions with Disney characters that most fans would have grown up with, and, in turn, fans will become nostalgic of the game itself.

Open to Multiculturalism?

While the genre of K-Pop music is expanding its reach globally, it is not something that is new in the music market. K-Pop combines the different aspects of music from ballet to Broadway and repackages it to reach its target audience. By including flashy dance sequences and catchy show tune lyrics, the South Korean music companies are able to draw in fans to help support their artists. Chuyun Oh suggests that with the dance sequences reflecting different genres, genders and races, the “transnational dance” enables multicultural communication through their music. The communication through their music is misleading as the country itself struggles with embracing multiculturalism and the artists themselves are not diverse. In the midst of growing globally, music companies have started expanding to international markets and acquiring international talent but controversies in management shows an unprepared readiness for diversity.

With the intention to examine the inconsistent messages of multiculturalism between music and society, this paper will expound on the differences presented through music videos, the news and fan accounts.  In the end this paper will explore the development of multiculturalism in a homogeneous society and how the economic changes are bringing forth an unexpected diversity that can be connected to the globalization of K-Pop and an increased global presence.
