Taste is About Compitition

Mark Greif says that “Taste is not stable and peaceful, but a means of strategy and competition” in his article published to The New York Times. His theory presents that this peacock effect of trying to be more cultured than the person next to you is part of our society and its values. Classes use culture as a means of trying to one-up each other. Think of it this way, someone of a rich background might say that a working class individual would never understand high culture. They might say that they have uncultured values and that they could never appreciate fine art or the work they do. Now someone of a lower class might say that this rich individual was a pompous asshole who’s never worked a day in his life and who doesn’t understand the feeling of watching football on Sunday with a cold beer in your hand. Mark Greif believes he understand why this occurs in society and he also believes that this event plays a larger part than we think in the world around us. “The things you prefer — tastes that you like to think of as personal, unique, justified only by sensibility — correspond tightly to defining measures of social class: your profession, your highest degree and your father’s profession.” Mark thinks that our tastes are conditioned into us by our mentors, peers and our class. He bases this theory on the french philosopher Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdie had this idea that society was extremely petty and superficial. He thought that we all cared about our image and standing a lot more than we let on. And this doen’t only extend to the rich and upper class, but everyone else as well. The working class and middle class suffer from the same process of thinking. Hipsters are no different. Greif believes that hipsters are a result of a generation of college educated individuals who were taught class and tastes from their professors and the university. Once these individuals graduated they found themselves in an economic downfall and a jobless environment that didn’t appreciate their skills. They then thought to distinguish themselves from the uneducated crowd by developing ‘taste’ much different and more ‘cultured’ than the other groups. They believe this alternate lifestyle and taste to be ‘superior in spirit.’ ” Groups closer in social class who yet draw their status from different sources use taste and its attainments to disdain one another and get a leg up. These conflicts for social dominance through culture are exactly what drive the dynamics within communities whose members are regarded as hipsters.” He also believes that hipster reinforce their own status by constantly changing and distinguishing themselves from others. “Hipster neighborhoods are crossroads where young people from different origins, all crammed together, jockey for social gain.” Hipster subgroups also jockey for control over one another by distinguishing themselves from each other depending on their socioeconomic backgrounds. Some individuals might right off wealthy-upper class individuals as “trust-fund hipsters” or liberal arts individuals as “having too much time on their hands”. This is all common place in our society and it creates a ever changing social hierarchy of what’s cool and what isn’t.

What has social media done for body image?

The article that I read this week discussed the positive impacts that social media has made for creating a societal image of beauty that is more attainable to women. This is something that I totally support, but I don’t think that it’s as widespread as the article made it seem.

Beauty bloggers like PatrickStarrr are definitely helping with breaking the traditional beauty norms. He’s a plus size Asian man doing makeup on YouTube. He’s representing plus size people and people of color, and loves to remind his followers that “makeup is one size fits all.” He often talks on his snapchat about where he finds his clothing and what techniques his stylist uses to make him look his best. This encourages his followers to embrace their bodies and to open themselves to the world. Unfortunately, Patrick is one of the few famous bloggers that has created a more positive space for beauty in this unique way. But, I do not want to denote what other bloggers have done.

Beauty bloggers aim to teach their followers. By teaching followers makeup tips and tricks, they’re making beauty more accessible to a lot of people. You don’t have to be a makeup artist to beat your face, you just have to be able to watch a tutorial. This eliminates the unattainable aspect of “unattainable beauty.” This only deals with the beauty that resides on the face, but I believe that if you have other insecurities, these may be lessened by the confidence gained by learning how to snatch your face. I know that insecurities with body image are not the same as insecurities one may have about the way one’s face looks, but I always feel a lot more confident in the way that I look when I’m wearing makeup. Faces are what we usually first notice when looking at or meeting someone. They determine how we may feel about someone based on their expression or whether or not we think they’re cute. So if you’ve got a little extra cushion for the pushin’ that you’re not happy with, but your face is beat for the gawds, I think that you’re going to exude more confidence than if you weren’t wearing any makeup at all. This means that social media has helped to create a more accessible standard of beauty. Self confidence is available in just a few clicks and tutorials, which is pretty cool to me.

The controversial conversation released Friday raised further red flags about the morality of Donald Trump, but his seemingly acceptable rebuttal of “just locker room banter” exposes a deeper issue regarding respect for women in our culture. He was recorded making claims as if he is entitled to a woman’s body, as if she were a property for him to purchase, solely because of his financial stature. Whatever the reason is, as it varies per person, there is a dominance and entitlement issue that goes beyond just Trump, and goes beyond just this recorded instance. Reading the article provoked thought about all of the frustration women endure because of men with like mindsets. The narrative as a woman is extremely different than the narrative as a man. Understood that we differ in gender. Not understood how that correlates with a different level of respect. Woman are socially expected to smile to vulgar “flattery”, or face even violence in some cases after rejecting. I just felt personally offended on behalf of myself, friends in situations that Trump has placed those women in, and all women who have been placed in situations because of similar men. The “just locker room banter” creates the expectation that this is how men communicate not only about women, but also to eachother. This sets the precedent that women are not to be taken seriously, have ultimate control of their bodies, or have much else to offer besides physicality. The fact that he, and many others, found this reasoning to not be flawed shows just how far we have to go while raising the next generations to eradicate the biased thinking.

I’m also thinking of this current one. I think about how people like Brock Turner are allotted more respect and empathy than the victim. They get to leave the court room with more dignity than the victim. It makes me wonder how women can be afforded less validation regarding a concept so basic. Even the toddler twins I nanny have a clear grasp of what no means, and that acting anyways will result in punishment. “Just locker room banter” implies joking with team mates, or discussing the work out. It’s incredible that he would categorize an innocent conversation as having the same implications as sexually assaulting women and discussing it like it has humor to it. He also implies that women can be bought, which is still implying an inner vanity and dependence upon men. Women (and men) have been fighting for equality. But there is a deeper rooted issue within our culture regarding the narrative behind women, our intelligence, worth, and self-validation due to greater achievements than beauty. There is a deeper rooted issue within our culture regarding women’s narrative through the eyes of entitled men.

Make A Change Starting In College

My main focus this semester is to add to the conversation of non-profit organizations. There are so many different organizations, projects, and people in our world who need just the basic necessities to live. Living in Boca Raton, it is easy to forget that there is so much pain and destruction happening in the outside world. Boca has always seemed like a bubble to me for this reason. In communities and private groups where there is great wealth, people do not like to discuss the poor and dying very much. It can be a very discouraging and overwhelming topic to try and break through. In wealthier areas there is this sense of individuality where everyone works through school in order to do something with their own life. In this race against time when everyone is chasing something different the needy have only a whisper of a voice. The vast separation between people is due to the social structure we have in society. When I think about groups as a whole as far as by age go, only kids in school are forced to come together to help others in need. When your whole class goes on a field trip to help the needy nobody complains. People like helping the world with people they care about. It is just good energy for everybody involved. In college, Greek life is a great example of groups of like-minded people coming together to improve the community they live in. I encourage students to look into Greek life at FAU because meeting new friends is awesome, but it is a great way to get involved with philanthropy and have a great chance to speak out to people our own age for the future of our generation. Once we all graduate and are on our own again, we may not have the same influence and desire as we may now. We are young and passionate people, why not use our youth for something incredible and rare. To make a difference does not require changing the way of the whole world. Helping just one person can change your life forever. I know we all think we have our own goals, but life is short. Doing the right thing is not always easy, but in my experience it comes with the least amount of regret. So, once agin, considering Greek life at FAU could be a great opportunity to influence a great number of like-minded people our age to do something positive for humanity.

So what do I think about the WORDS that came from Harry Potter in the story, well I think that if  anyone else had met Harry in Kings Cross, then I don’t think Harry would have gotten “on” to go back to the forbidden forest to continue to fight and defeat Voldemort. Before this scene, Harry is met by all his loved ones who have died, giving him encouragement about death and letting him know that they will be there with him at the very end and through always. Then after dying meets his old professor who says, “I’ve always praised myself on my ability to turn a phrase. Words are in my not so humble opinion an inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both implicating injury and remedying it.”, and  “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it” however rephrases it to say “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who deserve it” Dumbledore then ends by saying just because everything is happening in Harry’s head that doesn’t mean that it isn’t real. All this words lead up to Harry returning, killing Voldemort and continuing a wonderful life. Now all this words meant something, but what I do think is if the words were said by someone else, there may have been a different outcome. Say if Lilly Potter, his mother, met him there and even said the exact same things, well maybe the words would have influenced him to just pass on because he never had that opportunity to spend time with his mother invoking an emotion to be with her a leave the others behind.  However say for instance, Serious Black , his Godfather, met him there and said the exact same things, well in my own weird theory, I think he would have gone back, since he had that opportunity to spend time with Serious, he was able to at least get to know him a bit, and now Serious is giving him all this advice, well Harry may have felt prepared enough to go back and fight once more.

Now all of this to say I think words and word aversion may have something to do with the person who they are coming from. I think when things are said by a specific person, it allows us to process it though the heart of that person because we understand where they are coming from and the heart behind it.

Flaw in the Conclusions

It’s difficult for me to write a paper that is largely based opinion without inserting some biased conclusions. With that being said, I have made some mistakes in drawing some of my conclusions. Just to reiterate, my topic is on religion (mainly organized religion) and what I’m attempting to examine is whether it is helping or hindering the advancement of human society as a whole. Or, to put it another way, would society be more humane without organized religion(s). My opinion is yes. I think that the organized religion was something that was created by people in the upper class to keep the commoners in line. After watching Intelligence Squared debates, TED Talks, and reading articles online, I believe that government (statutory law) and religion (divine law) originated at the same time. The statutory laws were implemented (often by a legislation) to maintain order. But what happens when government officials aren’t watching? That’s where God comes into play. A higher being that sees everything you do and if he sees you do bad things, you’ll be punished in some way or another.

The flaw in some of my arguments (and those of athiest scholars) is that when I’m crtitiquing Holy Books and their followers, I’m using a literal translation of the books. This is detrimenal for a couple reasons. The first is that the books have been translated and re-translated and translated some more. This makes for inaccurate renditions of excerpts. The second is that a good portion of people who are affiliated with a religion don’t read it word for word and take the books literally. This argument was used by Dinesh D’Souza in the Intelligence Squred debate on if “The World Would Be Better Off Without Religion.” The side that was for the motion was critisizing the use of religion by reading sections of The Bible word for word, whereas the side against the motion was paraphrasing. I feel as though I have made a similar mistake in taking a Biblical Literalist approach to this topic.

Donald Trump is known for his crazy and over the top comments and personality. He is also known for his poor attitude towards women. A week ago, Trump was on the spotlight for body shaming Alicia Machado, a 1996 Miss Universe contestant. He said she was a pig and had gained weight during her reign. He went on to say that she was the worst contestant he has ever had. He focuses on women’s body and sex appeal. A tape of Donald Trump just surfaced headlines and news stations today as they showed Donald Trump saying crude comments about women. The tape is from 10 years ago. At the time of the tape, he was recruiting people for his show The Apprentince and also beauty pageant Miss Universe. He was also well known for his buildings, Trump Towers. Just a background story on Trump at this time: he was married for 4 months. In the tape; however, he is talking about hitting on a woman and saying she is so pretty and he has to have her. He also says he was hitting on her and trying to have sex with her, but the woman was not giving in. He tells his friend that eventually all women give in to him. This is where the crude comment comes in: “all you have to do is grab them by their p****”. That is hugely offensive and overly grotesque. It degrades women and even their private part. He assumes that because of his position he can get what he wants. He objectifies women and only cares about looks and sexual acts. He is aggressive and rude towards women and finds that intimidating them will make him appear stronger and that people will take him more seriously. Trump is not a Presidential candidate I take seriously. Any person, especially, a man,  to shame girls and objectify them is not someone I trust. There are so many more important issues to talk about and put focus on than beauty and  sexualizing girls.

As Trump is running for President, this is a man with no judgment, no character, no common decency towards others and no sense of compassion towards others, especially women.  It’s  men like Trump that hold this mentality of girls that promotes and increases assault, sex violence and rape in our culture. It normalizes these issues and diminshes  concern because “it’s biological to find a mate”, “boys will be boys”.. For these men it’s a laughig matter, but do not know how much their words and  behavior impact/influence  others in society. They do not hold the guys accountable for their actions towards girls, instead they blame the girls. For example, there are many guys out there that say “she was wearing a dress or skirt, so she was asking for it”. Umm..really? What a freakin lame cop out.  No, you’re just a coward and a horrible person to begin with. You’re the one who was responsible, not the victim. Stop blaming the victim. Stop shaming girls. Clothes are not a risk factor. The only risk factor is the presence of a rapist. Even if a girl was wearing jeands, they’d still find a way. No one deserves to be raped or wishes rape upon themselves. Even if someone is dressing sexy because they want to have sex, they still get the choice of who and when. No one dresses sexy because they want to be raped. Attention, maybe, rape, absolutely not.

There are even cases that we see him objectifying his own daughter, Ivanka:

“I don’t think Ivanka would do that, although she does have a very nice figure. I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her”.

“Yeah, Ivanka’s really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father…”

This comment about his daughter, Tiffany:

“She’s a very beautiful baby,” Trump replied. “She’s got Marla’s legs. We don’t know whether or not”—he put his hands to his chest to indicate breasts—”she’s got this part yet, but time will tell.”

These are disturbing comments! So creepy! Who says these things about their daughters? These comments create blurred lines between protective, loving father to  creepy, old sex-driven man. These comments can cause dis-trust towards him and also diminishes their innocence. The relationship of daughter-father drastically changes. He is a predator and goes after any woman he deems beautiful, including his own daughters! Gross! He has an overly twisted, sick mind. He judges women. He treats women as though they are disposable, for entertainment. He does not value other qualities, such as, personality, character, work ethic in women. He creates this criteria, idealism and competitiveness for beauty and girls attacking eachother on their looks. Instead of girls empowering each other, inspiring each other and celebrating one another’s achievements; there is only hate and creates a divide.

“The Weak don’t get to choose Anything, not even their Death.” – Trafalgar Law, the Surgeon of Death.

This was a quote that struck me the first time I heard it. Trafalgar Law, captain of the Heart Pirates in the manga One Piece, stated this to a fallen opponent, an opponent he fell. I wonder how leaders like him get to become the leaders they are? Given what I know what him in One Piece (which is relatively little thought), it does not seem he forced his constituents under his flag. I somewhat recall another character in the series mention Law is known as one of the most ruthless pirates in his domain. How do you come to lead being the person you are? and from this transitions over when you try to become a “good” (I’m saying this [“good”]with much caution) leader in modern times and space? (We’ll approximate in rural America).

One Piece has taught me to suspect that people don’t really follow you, they follow their own interests. If the person is interesting enough (for whatever reason) for you to follow, then you’ll follow them. Let’s assume that’s established: what makes you want to follow a person who is widely known as killing many others? Well, given this info, the decision could be based on fillers; if the person is wholesomely committed to killing downright unchangeably evil people in the world who brings more suffering to the next group of people than the last, then I might understand. I might even join. But, assuming this isn’t true, what would make you want to join this person? (This is a cliffhanger question meant to get you to think).

I have aspirations to help create a more just society, and when you consider the problems, even the problem of consider what is “just”, you realize sometimes you just have to act on a minor scale. Like, when you try to engladden a sad friend again, that might be considered just. But are there things you can provide for people that they can appreciate and consider “just” well done. This kind off drags towards Mill’s Utilitarianism, and, in a short sighted conjuring, we might say movie theaters are just in certain times, for certain people too… But minus the institution, how far could one go to create what’s Just? In a world of conflicting opinions, here we run into another problem of leading for your ideal. In a pithy but spot-on monologue, critical One Piece-antagonist warlord Doflamingo Donquixote shares his knowledge of opponents, history, ideals, influence, and power as they relate poignantly here.

“Pirates are evil? The Navy is righteous? Those views change as often as the tides! Kids who’ve never known peace have different values from those who’ve never know war. Those who stand at the top can decide the definition of “evil”. This place is the turning point. Justice will triumph, you say? Of course it will? Because the winners will become justice!”

This is simultaneously an inspiring and frightening  group of words to hear. I wonder, is there place where this doesn’t apply?

I will continue to search for leadership within One Piece and beyond for more insight and enlightenment to possibly discuss on my essays.

As I’ve been reading articles and viewing videos I have come to a realization that my topic on beauty image has a lot of sub topics that i can talk about in my paper. I think this is going to be my climb to the top of the mountain. I  have always had a little problem with organization in my papers  (and when this happens i tend to ramble a lot) and just thinking about all of the subtopics and the multiple directions that my paper can turn to is freaking me out a little or I should say a lot! This sucks cause I am very passionate about this subject and I really want to do an amazing job!

subtopics:

-beauty pageants vs. beauty image

-fashion vs. beauty image

-gender vs.beauty image

-social media vs. beauty image

-media vs. beauty image

-time vs. beauty image

-celebrities vs. beauty image

-beauty in the workplace regarding capabilities and how people are treated

-beauty in school

-make up  and beauty

Is beauty image the correct term???? Body/ Beauty standards? I need help! Lol

Moving forward the articles that I read about this week really made me think about how society evolves. Like why do people think that beauty correlates with size and color. Why is someones body type enough to judge their capabilities? Like that sucks! This goes on everyday and everywhere and I’m not sure that it will ever stop.

Why Go To Mars?

I believe travel to Mars is important for a number of reasons. There are two sets of reasons to go to Mars; the immediate, and the long-term. The immediate reasons are simple, although often unconvincing. A trip to Mars might draw as its immediate goals the two goals which got us to the moon, 1.) to prove to the U.S.’s enemies that the U.S. has more advanced technology and capabilities than any other nation on earth, and 2.) to undertake scientific research. The second reason listed does not bear much scrutiny, however, due to the fact that the U.S. and other nations have already sent probes and rovers to Mars which are able to preform a satisfying amount of research on Mars without endangering the lives of anybody in the process. The first reason listed, although more legitimate than the second, is difficult to conceive of as legitimate enough to justify the costs of a Mars mission. The U.S. currently considers itself as unrivaled in terms of technology and military power. The political landscape that drove NASA to the moon in the 1960’s and 70’s just doesn’t exist in the 21st century. A third conceivable reason seems the most legitimate. Mars’s natural resources, sparse though they are, currently seem to me to be the most legitimate immediate justification for a Mars colony. But even this seems dubious. Mars has no oil, no lumber, no foodstuffs.

The most legitimate reason of all lies outside the range of immediate reasons to go to Mars, and is the reason which Elon Musk himself most frequently cites. While the ultimate concept is not my own, I have developed my own way of understanding and rationalizing the idea that going to Mars is important in ensuring that the human race has as long a history as humanly possible (pardon the pun). The human race is used to thinking about the past in historic, rather than geologic terms. For most people 2,000 years is a long time, 4,000 years is a very long time, and so on. This way of thinking is understandable, only around 6,000 years ago, human civilization as we know it emerged in what is today Iraq. But if the human race wants to survive for as long as it is capable, we ought to start considering the concept of becoming first an interplanetary, and then later an interstellar species. Geologic history, the history of the Earth that began over 4 billion years ago, is full of catastrophic events. For much of this history life, let alone human life or human civilization, did not exist. During the relatively short time in which life did exist, extinction events were frequent. The mass extinction that whipped out the dinosaurs is well known, but far from the only extinction event. So in geologic terms, if the human race and human civilization is to survive for much more than the relatively puny 6,000 years it has already existed, it only makes sense to diversify our environment. Right now all our eggs are in the basket of earth. A massive catastrophe in geologic terms is nearly as common as a famine is in historic terms, so if the human race intends to have a long, prosperous and meaningful existence, it makes sense to spread to other worlds to ensure our survival beyond our current concept of historic time and into geologic time.
