The Superman Homepage

This website, which was started in 1994 by Steve Younis, has grown to be the biggest and most reliable Superman fan site in the world. The site has since been used by DC Comics as a reference site, and as a place for fans to congregate. Additionally, op-ed essays about the character are able to be submitted for review and eventual posting.

The Superman Podcast Network

This is a network of fan-made podcasts dedicated to Superman and his supporting cast of characters. The SPN was started by a guy who grew up reading comics in the 80s and decided to turn on a microphone and talk about comic books. The Superman Podcast Network has been responsible for the creation of numerous Superman-related podcasts.

Superman: The Movie

This movie was released in 1978 because Superman was DC’s biggest seller. The film has since been deemed one of the most important super hero movies ever made. The special effects team made Superman believably fly on screen. Additionally, the film proved to be the first example of a super hero film that took the source material seriously. Without this film, super hero films would not be the way that they are today.

Cultural Artifacts

  1. Kelly Greer’s version on Jar of Hearts in American Sign Language:

This YouTube video is Kelly translating Jar of Hearts in ASL. She not only has very descriptive facial expressions in the video but it also teaches the watcher about how to sign a song. Showing that sometimes you have to just act out the exactly what you are trying to say but also that you do not have to remain in your “sign circle”, the box from the top of your head to mid stomach that when you are signing is where you should keep the signs. In signing a song, you can be all over the place to act out the song. But this song she is doing, even a hearing person can see the pain she is expressing and the emotion she wants to convey. This is one characteristic of a really good song in ASL.

  1. A Paper Gloss in ASL.

In sign language, when a hearing person wants to sign a song in the correct grammar in asl, what they would do is gloss it. An example from the song humans by Christina Perry looks like this:

I can hold my breath

BREATH STOP CAN
I can bite my tongue

TALK STOP CAN
I can stay awake for days

DAY++ AWAKE CAN ME
If that’s what you want

IF WANT YOU

English and Sign Language don’t have the same amount of words, so a gloss allows a hearing person to interpret what the song is saying and convey that in ASL. A gloss allows you to talk about the direction a sign should go, the facial expression that should be paired and say if listing somethings, it allows you to say how long of a list you have. Any song can be glossed but from signer to signer the gloss may look different. It truly just depends on how the song is being interpreted.

  1. Cochlear Implant.

This is a small device that takes a wire and replaces the cochlear nerve to the brain causing artificial hearing. Some of the issues that come with this device is if a Deaf or hard of hearing person had any hearing before, that would be destroyed in the process of the procedure. The implant can also not function correctly, causing the person to have spent around $ 10,000 for nothing. However, there is an argument circling the implant because of the idea that it takes away your Deaf identity. There are some Deaf communities that won’t even accept a person after they have had the procedure because they are rejecting something that causes them to be a true Deafee. Another problem that comes with the procedure is that for it be as successful as possible, it really should be done before the age of 2 or even 1. This means that the parents of the Deaf child need to make this not only physical but a cultural decision for the child, before the child can have any input. This causes the community to be very split on the topic.

Cosplaying. A hobby? an art? Actually, defined as a type of performance art. Kingdom Hearts is among many of the video game franchises that are popular to cosplay. KH has its own cosplay celebrities too. Definitely something that requires money, time, and lots of dedication.

Manga. The KH manga sprung off from an attempt to better explain the KH story line. Not a lot of fans read it, but it might offer insight to certain things video-game-only fans might miss out on. Of course manga on its own is not exclusive to and was not created by KH, but there’s the stereotypical connection between hardcore fans of the game with manga/anime and all things nerd, especially with those who cosplay.

Portable game devices. The predecessor to the cellphone… as in, to keep kids distracted or that thing kids won’t look up from. Still going strong of course. Did anyone see the ad for the Nintendo Switch? A console and a portable in one… innovative.

Cosmopolitan magazine– On the cover of the magazine there are always girls with super low cut tops, tight dresses. Of course, the content on the cover surrounds sex. In big bold, letters, “Sex moves to keep him wanting more”, “kissing tips to win him over”. This magazine is not about the women, instead it focuses on the man. These are things you should try to please your man. It suggests that to get a man or make him happy you have to do these things. It basically puts women in a position as an object. Women are worth more than just pleasure.

Snapchat– Snapchat offers their users a variety of filters to make their photos more fun, cute, pretty and exciting to share with others. Users can play with backgrounds and effects on their photos. These different filters, however, can also alter someone’s appearance. Snapchat has photoshop like features. For example, on snapchat there is a “pretty” filter, such as, flower crown filter and butterflies. This filter can alter skin, hair, nose, and eyes. In this image, you can see that the nose is skinnier. The photos are all lightened to produce a much paler result. Skin becomes a lot smoother, the face more flushed with a rosy tint, and the jaw is visibly thinner. The hair becomes shiny and lips become rosy. This filter covers blemishes, birthmarks, freckles. These sort of filters encourage others to show what we think they want to see instead of who we truly are. This filter encourages girls to believe that their beauty is not good enough. By encouraging girls to use this filter, they are also letting girls lie about their appearances in fear that others will not accept the way they look like. It is a very superficial app.

Makeup- red lipstick is a must have for many women.  It evokes a confident, sexy look. Make-up has the effect to allow us to alter our looks. With makeup(contouring kit) we achieve defined cheeks and skinny nose, jawline is more defined. It comes to show that with  makeup, girls can achieve a sort of porcelain doll look. With the use of makeup, you can appear more attractive to appeal the opposite sex or feel more confident about yourself. The problem is that if you wear too much makeup that you look like 2 completely different people, it is likely that you are hiding something. You  look fake and deceite other people. Makeup is the most common mask we wear. We use makeup to cover up blemishes, dark circles, which is okay, but it is not the true reflection of yourself. You are covering up what you really look like. It seems that girls wear makeup because they are ashamed of what they look like when really makeup enhances the way you look.

Skirts/shorts– For example, there are many guys out there that say “she was wearing a dress or skirt, so she was asking for it”. It’s men that hold this mentality of girls that promotes and increases assault, sex violence and rape in our culture. They do not hold the guys accountable for their actions towards girls, instead they blame the girls and their clothes.  Clothes are not a risk factor. Even if a girl was wearing jeans, they’d still find a way. No one deserves to be raped or wishes rape upon themselves. Even if someone is dressing sexy because they want to have sex, they still get the choice of who and when. Stop shaming girls and blaming the victims. We need to teach boys to be educated, respectful men and not to look at girls as sex objects. Be responsible for your actions and have some self-control.

Facial Hair: Seems to be a sign of Masculinity in many cultures, but now appropriated by the Hipster culture as a symbol of their fashion. Beards don’t display hard work or manliness anymore, but instead they represent a taste for pumpkin spice frappuccino’s and new age music. Is societies idea of masculinity transforming or is facial hair becoming less a sign of masculinity and more a sign of tastes?

Gluten Intolerance: Celiac Disease was once extremely rare, but lately more people have been self diagnosed with the disease. The Gluten-free diet has become very popular lately and in supermarkets its become increasingly easy to find gluten-free foods at the store. Is Gluten Intolerance a serious health issue that needs to be tackled? Or are people feigning a weakness to Gluten as a fashion statement? If so, what does this say about people who fake a disease as a fashion trend? What does it also say about the people who accuse people of faking a disease.

Craft Beers: A brewery that produces a small amount of beer every year and specializes in quality and technique is known as a microbrewery. Over the years they’ve gained immense popularity and beer connoisseurs have pledged their lives to them. But why isn’t normal beer good enough? Why do people chastise Budweiser and Coors Light? However, some say that only real men drink Bud and Natty. Does drinking cheap beer prove your masculinity?

Technology was used for something good as stated in the reading. Unfortunately, society has utilized Social media as a way to sell beauty and false dreams. Women Now a days spend too much time surfing the internet and comparing their body image with other people. Postpartum weight used to be a secondary problem during the 19th and 20th century, because mothers used to focus more about the meaning and the responsibilities that having a child brings and they did not have to worry about what other women or celebrities looked like after the birth of their child. Facebook, Instagram and plastic surgery for example; have become one of the most toxic artifacts for women after they they give birth. These social media not only represent a competition as to who looks better and who has better material things etc. Social media has become the number one representation that women are supposed to have a six packs 6 weeks after having a baby and if not the women is considered to be lazy and unattractive. With the invention and advancement of plastic surgery most women that post pictures of themselves on the inter net and are showing a perfect body right after giving birth are considered to be “made up” meaning that they had different plastic surgery procedures in order to have a perfect body. Women will spend many hours throughout the day surfing the internet looking at other women who recently had a baby and a couple of weeks after they are back to their normal size. But what they are not understanding is that social media is destroying their self esteem and sense of self worth. Postpartum Women who are obsessed  to look like a celebrity right after they have a baby, they are forgetting that the time after their baby is born should be mostly about their healthy dieting and the welfare of the baby not their looks or what is  going on on social media.

List of Cultural Artifacts

Here is a list of cultural artifacts pertaining to Feminism (I wasn’t sure what to tag this assignment, so I’ll change it if you post a new tag).

  1. Fashion Magazines (specifically Vogue) and magazines regarding home life, such as Martha Stewart Living and Good Housekeeping. This is because through the use of cultural icons, such as movie stars, models, and people with particular talents (cooking or decorating or parenting instructors) on television, these magazines are influencing how women dress, perceive themselves, and act in the role of a wife and mother in the stereotypical household. These artifacts tend to mostly affect the middle class.
  2. I’m not sure if this counts per se because it’s not a physical artifact, but instead can be found in a multitude of different artifacts (music, images, dress, etc) but the concept of Riot Grrl. This is specific to the 90’s 3rd Wave Feminism, and inspires women to throw away the norms and pursue their own sexuality, however they define it. It also spurred a lot of concepts such as using “ze” instead of “she” (because he is in it) and herstory vs history.
  3. Susan B. Anthony Coin. I would only argue that this is the misuse of a feminist artifact, because the poor reception of the coin had nothing to do with her being a woman, but instead that coins were becoming cumbersome, and they referred to it as the Carter coin because it was administered during his reign. I think the implications of how practicality refuted an attempt and feminism is interesting, although I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a full blown correlation.
  4. The “Pill”/Birth Control. With the rise of contraceptive methods came a rise in women’s sexuality, because through these products they could have non-monogamous sex without the fear of getting pregnant. Also, if they were married, they could have sex without worrying about having more children, and they could lead a career.
  5. Bras, which I did a whole blog post about.

  1. Gol D. Roger’s strawhat
  2. Full Crew Cosplay: The idea of forming a crew
  3. Luffy vs. Strongest Other Person

Good old Monkey D. Luffy (MDL, for now on). Although he is as renowned in the manga One Piece (of which he is one of the main protagonists) just as much as his crew is, being that he holds the outstanding position of being the Captain of one of the most wanted pirate crews in the One Piece world currently (and as he might be supposedly destined to obtain the greatest treasure of the seas), he has consequently conjured some phenomena uniquely attributed for him. Notice I said for him and not to him, which I say because I don’t mean to imply it’s as directly and solely caused by him.

Perhaps you’ve seen pictures of people cosplaying, and amidst all the guns, cool-silver plating, go-go boots, pink and green spray painted hair, you may have seen perhaps a rather out place, common, Florida tourist-type looking-fellow with a small straw hat that has a red-band just above the brim. This hat is the hat that means all to the man MDL, and without it, it just wouldn’t be the same One Piece. It was passed down onto him by his hero, the pirate who most inspired him to become one, “Red-Haired” Shanks, who actually had the hat be passed down to him from the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. This hat has taken a life of its own, as various vloggers can be seen wearing it or having it in the background of their rooms, not only that, but many vloggers have themselves proposed various theories as to why Luffy received the hat in the first place (beyond just what we’re told in the manga), its function, the symbolism around it, and more. Effectively, it has taken a life of its own, yet inseparable from the idea of Luffy and his destiny to be great, such that many people interested in One Piece recognize it as such and have worked on its image such that it increases its significance.

The hat’s significance in One Piece can’t be overlooked, but, to return to the idea of cosplaying, you rarely see a group of cosplayers solely grouped up wearing a Luffy outfit with the hat. No, usually if you see the hat, it means that you will see a green-haired man with 3 swords, a long-nosed man with a sling, some one possibly dressed as a reindeer, and a few other distinctive folks One Piece fans with recognize. Who are they? None other than the Straw Hat Pirates, of course!! As a work of culture, full One Piece crews of Straw Hat Pirates cosplayers have inspired others to cosplay as rival pirates or allies. What is further interesting though is that these kind of images point to the idea of having a real life “crew” for some folks. Indeed, I have read a few forums that consider what it would taken to put together a crew just as cool and tightly-knit as the crews (more so the Straw Hat Pirates though) we find on One Piece. The “crews” we see people putting together in cosplay groups could be seen as working within the faction of people who would like to have camaraderie we see like that in the manga.

But on talk of elements of cooperation, now we find the work of competition. Luffy is no originator to this trend, indeed Batman, Superman, and others have long ran appearances on these “mediums’, but we that he is now getting a spot in the ever-illustrious renditions and conversation about “who would win in a fight between character 1 and character 2.” (typically it’s the strongest characters of a book, movie, manga, TV series, video game, etc.). Personally, it is so cool to see Luffy versed up against people like Goku and Superman, because I remember when I first saw these A vs. B matches come along for Goke and Superman, so in a way like watching a tradition build. Not only is Luffy pit against old school dudes like the Bats and the Man, but he is also pit against his contemporary, popular manga “rivals”, so to speak, Naruto (of the eponymous popular manga-turned-TV series) and Ichigo (also another popular character from the manga Bleach). Like the Straw Hat and One Piece pirates, these A vs. B matches mark down yet another that Luffy has not only been embraced by people, but has been “radiated out”, so to speak, in the culture by them too, and I bet by the time the series ends (we have been told by the One Piece creator that it won’t be for at least 10 years) there’ll be many more of these to be found around.
