Okay, so at this point I have looked at word aversion in a really cute fun way, I have looked at it in a way that took a dark turn, but this week just kinda pissed me off. I cannot really stand the way the elections are going, especially the words they are using. Honestly, I am noticing in everyday life, that, especially my friends that are following the election are starting to speak like the candidates that they are voting for. And that makes me think, can you have an aversion to the words someone says just because its them. Because at this point, there is one candidate who can say that “they” have the cure all the worlds pain, but because of previous things said, I wont listen. Maybe that is the problem, I just don’t want to hear it, I don’t want to know what this candidate has to say and in turn is making me closed minded towards him.  Lets be real, I am not a very political person, but I have my eyes on this election. besides me, the whole world has their eyes on us right now and everyone really wants to know who are we going to elect as a nation. I have watched this election season tear friends apart, knowing that there isn’t really a better choice, but maybe a less evil one. These candidates need to be more aware of what they are saying because at this point I have a hate toward one candidates just because of the words being produced from their mouth. I think at this point language and wording are going to be their best options.

Are the Candidates Head’s in the Clouds

Words, man a lot of words were used during the presidential debate. NBC put together a word cloud for each candidate, some of Clinton’s top words were “Think”, “People”, and “Know”. While Trumps top words were “Country”, “Look” and “Going”.  This week people are analyzing the words that each one used and what that really means in the line of their campaign. An analysis for the word “think” as one of Clinton’s top words shows that she is raising a challenge to the people to really observe themselves, the word “know” also goes along that line, asking people to discover and realize the truth in what her opponent believes. Looking at Trumps selected the word “Country” makes him seem like a patriot, wanting to stand strong for our people. While the word “Look” is to give an opportunity to restate a statement made that may have not been directly what he wanted to say. However I think the best words to come from this debate were the celebrity tweets that went on during the debate. Supporters of Donald Trump like James Woods made sure to crack on every word that came from Clinton’s mouth, from her desire to help those in poverty, to the Middle East. shonda rhimes summarized the debate in her tweet saying “Hillary: “I am prepared, educated and informed.”Donald: “I had something super mean to say but I am keeping it to myself!” “.  Ann Coulter even took the opportunity to take a hit at the moderator saying, “Great that debate covered Trump’s taxes, income, father, ’72 lawsuit, remarks as a reality tv star…& didn’t waste any time on immigration”.

My question is, did anyone develop a greater aversion to Clinton or Trump during this debate? As I’ve been researching, anytime any form of communication happens, word aversion can begin to set into peoples hearts. I think a lot of people watching this debate were hoping to be able to realize a better candidate, but even Patricia Heaton said “In good conscience I can’t vote for either of these two…“. Will this ever change, will we have a definitive answer of the better candidate or will it remain to vote for the lesser of two evils.

This week has been a really interesting week in the personal development of my topic for myself. This week I somewhat took a left turn on my topic of word aversion, and instead of looking at silly aversions like “moist” or “panties” and instead looked at the word aversion or even underlying hatred towards words like “Cop”, “Black”, or “Arab”. After looking into the news and the different developments of this issue that has become more media centered, I’m starting to get angry and scared. Seeing where our world is headed and seeing what is happening in the news is really bringing to my eyes the reality of this world today. I understand the concepts of fear and stereotypes but what I don’t understand is why we are letting the media morph our minds and their subjective reporting telling us who we should and shouldn’t be afraid of.  I remember when 9/11 happened and I was old enough to understand that I was no longer supposed to share what I believed at the time, I understood that people saw me and my family as a threat because all of a sudden Arabs were now all associated with fear. Seeing the struggle my family goes through at the airport just because they are darker skin and have Arab names makes me so angry. Angry because NO ONE should have to get judged based on a stereotype. It literally breaks my heart when I hear and see this. However for the first time in my life, I’m afraid. I’m afraid to tell people where I come from, and that I have Muslim family back home. It’s scary for me to just be me. But on top of this one issue with my family being Arab, my roommates are black. I fear that one day they will be racially profiled and that they wont come home. Growing up I knew the racism in the world, but now, now its making people do some very scary things. I think more then angry I am just scared to see how far this goes. There is not a day that goes by that this isn’t something running through my head, but Its this immediate aversion people are believing then getting to know the real person and who they truly are. The fears that I have now, I don’t think my family foresaw when they moved to this country, but even more so now, how much further is this going to go, how far will our country be led by its emotions and when will this fear be lifted?

Why does the good sometimes invoke bad?

This week I have been reading up on the “Free Hugs Project”.  In the most basic definition it is “A friendly embrace will put a smile on your face”. This organization, started by Ken Nwadike, a young black man, purpose is to bring peace to hostile situations, by braking the tension with a hug. As we all know in the recent months, there has been many shootings between police officers and black men and women. However from the articles and videos I have seen affiliated with this project, there have been three sides taken. One, which is the “this doesn’t effect me”. But the other two, for and opposing, these have become two very valid and heard arguments.  The for argument is one who just wants peace, who say that the hugs and peaceful protest will be the answer. However the against is why bridge a gap, that isn’t truly being filled, you are going up and hugging people but tomorrow their will be another incident.  By this I mean, the article I read was taking about people in Charlotte NC, who wanted Ken to leave because they felt like him walking around offering free hugs was him just giving up the “war”, that the police officers didn’t care about black lives , so why should they listen to what they have to say, they are hired to protect, but in their opinion, they are doing more harm then good. However he sees it as him just bridging a gap because all people in this situation are people too.  Relating to my topic of word aversion is because, even though there are messages of peace are coming out, people don’t want peace without action and justice. This aversion either to the word “cop” or the word “black” is what Ken is hugging for. This young man doesn’t care about what people think, and like I’ve been studying, aversion to specific word can be a serious issue,  it’s this idea that one person has more of a right then another, that is what Ken is hugging for, for all people to be seen as equal in this battle. However because of what is happening, there is a strong response when he shows up to events. Can a hug be bad?

My topic for the time being is word aversion. The ad I have selected really speaks to many different audiences. The first being just the general populous who appose abuse on women.  Looking at this women who is covered, however seeing the bruise under her hijab. This invokes many different responses in people, some it would be pity, others anger, maybe even fear.  Another group is the Arab women being abused, advertising that this is not something that can stay covered up forever.  This ad comes from an organization called the Kind Khalid Foundation and their website is kkf.org.sa , a humanitarian organization organized in Saudi Arabia. This speaks volumes because of what the middle east has been known for in the recent years. The way this article relates to the concept of word aversion is there are many different responses that could be invoked.   This semester I want to take some time and see how come some words invoke different emotions. Looking at the Ad there are a few words that come to mind that may fall under the definition of aversion, the first being abuse. When most people hear or even see abuse, they cringe. This aversion to the word can cause people to feel so deeply for this women, even make them want to help her in some way. This deep affection for her could cause this ad  to trigger some type of emotion for her.   Another aspect is the aversion to the word Muslim unfortunately. As an Arab American, I notice I am looking at a Muslim women. Just this alone will invoke many emotions. For some Americans, this may invoke an emotion of anger or fear because of how Muslims are portrayed in this country. In my opinion, this would not be the best Ad to use here because of that one reason. Some Americans may not even notice that she is being abused because all they may see is the fact that she is Muslim. Because of that racial profile, some people may not even care that she is being abused. Whatever personal philosophy or belief you stand by, this image will invoke some type of emotion in you, causing you to react in some type of way. creative-print-ads-64

To summarize my topic in a few hundred words is going to be difficult because I’m not really sure what my topic is going to be yet. However I did my reading on Words and specifically word aversion and the  concept of word aversion in American Sign Language.

Words are a essential part of our social beings. More than words is the concept of language. My research started in a video on words and specifically bad words. It is said that Marchex did a study in 2013 on conversations done in call centers throughout the year. They realized that people in Ohio cursed the most on those calls saying F*** and Sh** the most, while Washington State said the least amount of profane words. Then the vlogger went into the how in the 1600-1800’s when you were to curse using the Lords name it was said that you physically injured Him. This led to the idea of different levels of Sociability, ie  using the word defecate vs sh**. One is used in a medical professional setting, while one has become a vulgar word used in everyday language. This turned into a comparative look on words in society, looking back to old English when it was the difference in society that defined the language you spoke. For example low class would call their meet by the animal name, chicken or cow, while upper class would say poultry or beef. This led to looking into society and how we change the meaning of words or even make words more or less acceptable. For example, how sex and profanity are becoming more acceptable, while identity, religion and pronoun usage is becoming more unacceptable. This led me to the topic I think I am going to continue researching which is word aversion which is an intense and irrational disgust for a particular word or phrase, for me the word is moist..I really cannot stand the word moist. This led me to a book called Forbidden signs which had a topic discussed by Professor Benjamin Pettingill who has been doing research on aversion in American Sign Language. He says that Sign Language aversion comes with the “Natural Language” that comes with Sign Language, which can be described as facial expressions, countenance, and involuntary muscle movement. This means that the aversion comes with the facial expression paired with the actual sign. This video is a good example of sign paired with facial expression with aversion because it shows the emotion behind the sign, you know exactly how the song emotions should be heard. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdly3HBnj-s) However take a look at this video, he has no facial expression so honestly if i didnt know sign language I would have no idea what he was trying to say.(https://www.signingsavvy.com/sign/DISGUST/3301/1) Professor Pettingill says that went as far to say that you cannot have a sign language without the natural language. The fact that word aversion does not come natural in ASL is pretty interesting, only when it is paired with a facial expression or an element of Natural Language can it have some sort of word aversion.

Words….. Honestly this podcast was a confusing one to me. Since I am fluent in sign language, the story about the man who couldn’t speak really grabbed my attention, his miming and focus on the women was interesting to me.  When I began learning sign language, my thoughts went from images, to me looking at myself signing what I was learning. How does that even happen, the way I thought about words changed from the word and its meaning, to an image of a person making a hang gesture and this now being my reality of the word. Little did I know, two years after I began learning sign language, would I be diagnosed with a hearing disorder that would cause me to go deaf for periods of a time. This made me realize the importance of words. Listening to the “pod-casters”  talk about is language important or necessary after Jill Bolte said that she enjoyed the silence, made me want to jump through my headphones and scream, DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING?!?!?! When I first lost my hearing in High School, I was so afraid, I had no way to explain to my parents, who don’t know sign language, what was going on but just scream, because I didn’t realize I was screaming, that I couldn’t hear. Without my words, my connection to the world was lost. After listening to Words by Radio Lab, I listened to  60 Words by Radio Lab, which pretty much explains the importance and weight of words and what words we use, by Discussing the bill that Former President Bush wanted through congress so he could take action after 9/11. Between words and 60 words, my opinion has grown so much in the importance and weight of words. Even if those words come in gestures that flash through the mind of those without words.

Writing has never really been my thing. From my lit teacher that never liked my writing, to my comp teacher who absolutely loved my writing. I never thought what I had to say was important and the things that I wanted to say, i didn’t know how to convey them. During my sophomore year of high school, my teacher asked us to read an article, similar to the chapter written by Ballenger, on picking a topic that I enjoyed and expanding on it. Then the assignment to go along with the article, was to write on something, anything that I enjoyed. Well, me being a teen who thought nothing was important enough to write about in my first college class in high school. I sat for hours trying to think of something. Now I kinda wish I had Ballenger’s formula on writing, because sparking that one idea has always been hard for me. SPARKING A SPARK THAT DIDN’T EXIST. I didn’t know how to pick a topic that I enjoyed. SO finally I picked some random topic, probably swimming, because that was my life at the time. But then I ran into the issue that Reid wrote about, exigency. WHAT WAS I SUPPOSE TO WRITE. Instead of going into this in depth study on swimming, I did a surface level research job and a mediocre writing job on a topic that I loved but didn’t think there was much more to write about. Flash forward to today,SPARK, I have finally figured out a way, other than Ballenger’s to make a SPARK. I do word studies. I enjoy studying and reading the bible. But I had an issue, many of the words I didn’t understand the actual word or even the heart behind it. SO what I started doing was word studies on those words, looking at the Hebrew and Greek, getting a better understanding of what I was reading. This turned into me doing extensive research, gaining an exigency 😉 on different topics of the bible. I have now written numerous bible studies on cosmology, faithfulness, steadfastness, watchmen, and many others, all because I started these word students. I think what Ballenger is saying in his chapter, is to make these lists on things you like and understand and Reid wants us to ask ourselves questions about importance and its reliability to ourselves to help us develop these sparks that don’t come very naturally. To Spark a Spark doesn’t have to be difficult when we expand our knowledge on things we think.
