MAKEUP YOUR MIND:

How Makeup is Evolving Socially, Culturally, and Technically

Makeup is constantly evolving when it comes to social media, its surround with culture, and the technical side of makeup as well. Makeup in general has changed the way people are changing themselves. The way people talk about makeup on social media sites such as Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest, and many more. Culturally, makeup has evolved surrounding pop culture such as movies and famous people. Makeup is being made to match the movies and famous people that everyday people idolize. Makeup is becoming more technical not just in a technology aspect but also in a manner of application and tools that are being used.

TOPIC LOCATE THE TOPIC POSITION

Makeup is a topic that is not necessarily important for everyone to jump on board and learn about, but it is a topic that should be brought to the attention of people who have interest in learning more about how makeup is constantly changing the way people look, view things, and feel. Makeup helps people feel good about themselves but can also backfire from how people view the way that person is wearing makeup or how much. Socially, thousands of people are viewing many videos every day to see, “what the next big thing is.” Culturally, makeup is beginning to be sold in pallets of different colors that match the famous people that non-famous people idolize as well as movies that people love. Makeup tools are changing their shapes and the way that they are used. New inventions are occurring for easier makeup application as well as faster makeup application.

(Ideas) Why Do People Care?

Okay, but seriously. Why do people care about how much or how little makeup you wear? This has a lot to do with my topic, “makeup”, but this issue just seems to always spark my thoughts to runneth over. I feel like you can’t win. If you don’t wear makeup you look like a person who is dying and if you do wear makeup you are “fake”. You just can’t win over some people. Not to mention, “are you the one that is applying my makeup or buying my makeup or having to wear my makeup?” Then STFU! I believe that you should do you. If you want to cake makeup onto your face to where you can scrape your finger through it at the end of the day, so be it. But if you also want to let your face be free and naked with nothing then you should do that too. Makeup doesn’t define who I am but it sure as hell makes me look a lot more alive. I also take into consideration the fact that someone like me who loves makeup is artsy. I grew up loving colors, drawing, pictures, and fashion. It’s in my blood to stand out and be unique. I love the different types of makeup and the different ways to apply it. I also love the different looks that makeup can make. The only problem is that once you start wearing makeup on an every day basis, that’s when not wearing makeup can be tough. I have tried this before and it sucks. I wear makeup all the time and then one day I decide not to wear any and people are passing “Get Well” cards over my way.  The only thing that scares me is I don’t want my daughter to think that wearing makeup or not wearing makeup is good or bad, which is what society is making this out to be. I just hope that she will do whatever makes her happy as a woman. Whether she wears makeup or not, I just hope that she does it for the right reasons and not what society thinks she should do as a person. Again, as stated above, you cannot win. All you can do is do what you want to do and make yourself happy.

I was reading an article online about “why do people care about other people’s makeup”. It caught my attention because I feel like I want to know the answer too. The article discussed a recent event in which recording artist, Alicia Keys, refused to wear makeup publicly anymore. This caused such an uproar with fans, paparazzi, and critics. I feel like, “who the hell cares!” Why does it matter who wears what and for what reasons. The article discusses how a news anchor saw what Alicia Keys was doing and wanted to see if she didn’t wear makeup on television would people notice. Well, of course people are going to notice. If you wear makeup every day on TV then decide you are not going to, prepare to be noticed. In fact, I feel like thats the rhetoric right there. This articles title is about why do people care but the person themselves who wrote the article decided not to wear makeup to see what kind of positive and/or negative attention they would in fact get. The writer’s purpose is to inform and entertain the idea that if you wear makeup all the time and choose to one day not wear any, people will notice. But do people actually care? That’s the question that I feel the author is trying to answer here. Using Alicia Keys as a current event helped the author point out that if Alicia Keys is doing it and people are giving her hell for it then what will happen if “everyday” people do it? What will be the outcome? The text mixing historical events that had to do with makeup as well as pop culture makes the article more relatable for the reader.

This isn’t research; it’s reading. Get an idea of the nature of the topic, relevant history, related issues, past/current discussions, points of interest, areas of agreement/disagreement, etc. Your goal is to get an idea of what’s “out there” and gauge your knowledge about (and interest in) the topic.

WRITE: A summary of what you found—not everything—but a summary of the conversation. Who is talking? Where? How? In what ways? Please include a few links and/or titles of particularly interesting or representative texts and find/mention at least one scholarly/academic text.

Additional Notes:

  • Please write a sentence or two before your summary that identifies your topic/subject.
  • You should aim to write ~400-600 words (but more is fine if you have more to say!)

My topic is mainly about makeup in general, the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.

For my topic I was able to find a lot of youtube videos pertaining to makeup. The different types of makeup, the different application styles of makeup, and the different usage for makeup. One of my favorite makeup artist that I enjoy watching on YouTube is Kandee Johnson. She is able to make makeup tutorials for people that may not ever wear makeup. She does every day looks, Halloween, special occasion, cartoon inspired, you name it, she does it. She also has a lot of beauty hacks that anyone can benefit from. She makes video about product/clothing hauls. Hauls, are when people go out and buy several or more of their favorite items that they like on an everyday basis or that they liked at the time of shopping. My other favorite makeup artist that I enjoy watching and reading about is Jeffree Star. He is a popular internet sensation who became famous off of myspace for his overall look and his music. He is amazing at makeup and is also a role model for the LGBTQ community. He makes “haul” videos as well as makeup tutorials and his “monthly favorites”. Monthly favorites is exactly what you think it is. It is the blogger/vlogger’s (video blogger) favorite makeup or product that month. I find all of this vlogging and blogging about makeup and ways to apply makeup interesting in the sense that it is constantly evolving.

Mind you, these are two completely different people in the sense of how they portray themselves, who they are, their interests, and overall their language..

Just be prepared!
