I have been fortunate to gather a great deal of physical literature by Place of Hope. Anyone who reads the folder of information I have would have to be made of stone to not appreciate the dedication that this organization has pledged to these children who are in desperate need of help in our very backyard. Place of Hope has a boy’s cottage in Boca Raton just west of the turnpike and is in the process of building a girl’s cottage as well. I helped paint, cleanup, and do other miscellaneous service around the campus, but I really did not do much compared to the people who really run the cottage like Founding Executive Director, Charles Bender. In a newsletter Mr. Bender sent out to Mission Partners, some reasons why Boca Raton built a campus is revealed. There are over 2000 children who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care in Palm Beach County alone. Place of Hope realizes that it is not the State’s obligation alone and that only by private contribution can a safer reality exist for these innocent kids. It is no secret that Boca Raton ranks among the leaders in the wealthiest cities in the world. In this newsletter, Bender announces the 2016 Hope Bash Boca to celebrate the ongoing momentum that so many selfless people have helped create. Also, the winners of the “Jay DiPietro Hero of Hope” award are shown in the letter. I think giving awards for donations and effort can have political disadvantages to it as well as positive incentives, so I will get back to my absolute opinion on that one. The letter is full of inspiring words of praise, thanks, and energy that is just what an organization like Place of Hope should most certainly consider when reaching out to their fellow partners. I really do believe that Place of Hope can grow significantly from having cottages in Boca Raton. I would also just like to take this opportunity to call out Boca Raton Magazine for writing the most lethargic and unoriginal article about Place of Hope. The article they wrote is not even a page long and offers no sign that a real human being capable of emotions wrote it whatsoever. Meanwhile, their headline article is about some impotent beer and sausage festival that is supported by pictures and twice as much writing coverage. Anyone who subscribes to Boca Raton Magazine should stop wasting their money. I encourage those looking for real literature about real people with real problems to at least go to the Place of Hope website.
In the time we live in today, especially in the type of western-minded place we live in, the internet is the answer to our lazy and convenience driven prayers. I cannot even count the number of times I’ve had a question and asked google before I could even stop to think about what the answer could possibly be. Now that I think about it, this type of problem solving completely deters us as humans from creating alternate answers, or critically disregards any impossibilities for these questions that we come across. I find this relevant to my topic because when people want to find out about Place of Hope they will most likely not do the following: go in person to Place of Hope and see with their own eyes what it is really about. They won’t go and meet the children in person or the people who run the home for the children. They probably will not call to, at the very least, hear the voice of someone who is affiliated with the organization. They might ask a “friend” who is involved, but I see everyday how people love ignoring one another, especially when it is about something that actually matters. So, the internet, or Place of hope website, is where people will most likely get some of their information. Safe and sound behind their lit up computer screens in their dark homes, people will attempt to make a positive difference in their community. Does Place of Hope need money? Yes, they most certainly do. Feeding children who have been neglected and abused is not free. However, on the very first page of the website there is a big button in the center that says, “Donation”. There are a few reasons why I have a problem with this. It bothers me, and this is very real, that people think they can just give some of their salary to a charity group, that they may or not follow up, and just call it a day. Who is to say what we should all give. Who is to say if certain people should give more money than others. Money is not the answer to everything. If these kids had responsible and loving parents this would never happen. Trying not to get too far off my point, but I think that effort and love goes much further than money ever will. I think if Place of Hope could restructure this incredibly important page for their cause and portray a real message that people who really want to help can get on board with.
For this submission I will discuss some of the reading I have done that Place of Hope has printed as well as some of the ideas and advice that some writers of non-profit organizations have provided. Robert Tinajero, of Nonprofit Enterprise Center news letter, writes, “It is crucial for non-profits to not only have people with good hearts but people with the ability to translate important ideals into effective presentations of those ideals, whether written or spoken, and to create effective verbal, written, and visual argumentations.”(Tinajero 1) I think this is an interesting point because when I see media marketing for non-profit organizations I often see pictures of sad faces, or material benefits that a donator can win, like a T-shirt, and there is something lost in-translation that makes me not trust the ad. Here, Tinajero says that it is the ideal that must be focused on. A real vision and plan that people can look to as a goal or end result. To show, if not to manipulate, the person not believing this in not an ongoing problem if not for the greater good of helping those truly in need. Tinajero goes on to discuss the importance of discourse in non-profit writing. Writers for non-profits realize that written communication can be interpreted in different ways, so it is important that the message they are blasting out will reach the reader with the appropriate message that the writer intended, which is mush harder said than done. There are morals and values here, though. This is a charity for the betterment of mankind, so it is important to use persuasion, or rhetoric, in an ethical fashion. The rhetorical terms kairos and ethos are also used in this article to display more detail to the art of persuasive writing for nonprofit organizations. In reading a newsletter that Place of Hope created for their 15 year anniversary in 2014 I observed some of these techniques that Tinajero touches on. The age, race, ethnicity, nationality, and other factors of the child’s personal life are included to create this idea of kairos. Creating a more detailed profile for each child enables the reader to get a better understanding and idea for why contributing, and contributing NOW, is so important. Place of Hope uses e-mail, flyers, meetings that require written speeches, signed letters, and so much more that are dedicated to creating critical and effective discourse for their cause. Through researching different literature and written communication that Place of Hope is continuously creating, I hope to come to a better understanding about how non-profit writing works, so that I can contribute to The Place of Hope cause to the best of my ability.
This is going to serve as the empty space in which I can hopefully progress towards solving some of the problems at hand for the charity group, Place of Hope. My mother works closely with a local campus for neglected and abused children right here in Boca Raton. A charity group that is sponsored by Lamborghini, I was skeptical at first about how much good work was really being done in this group. Despite my ignorance, I was pleased to find out that Place of Hope has one many awards, one being ranked one of the best 11 charities of 2014 by the Huffington Post. This is some of the first research I have done on my own about Place of Hope, however I have volunteered there and have attended some meetings about how to improve the vision of the organization. Looking into some groups on campus that deal with charity organizations is not a bad place to get more ideas. The majority of these kids have been victims to sex-trafficking and other abusive crimes. I think if some of these kids could get on camera or on a radio show to tell their story, the impact could be unmeasurable. Living in such an affluent area such as Boca definitely has its advantages with contacts that have some of the deepest pockets on the planet. I really enjoy writing and hope that one day I can use the skills I have learned over the years to reach people on a deeper level. Publishing works can help send my voice to places I will never step foot. A newsletter is not a bad idea, neither is a brochure, but a well-reseached and contributed magazine could be the cutting edge way to get the message of Place of Hope to people who could make a significant impact. It’s not all about the banquets and showing up the other donators. Everyone can help. These are kids without families. There needs to be a way to show people that by just giving some of their time and energy goes so much further than can be realized from home behind a computer. There are so many different writing styles. I wonder what rhetorical writing style is the best for charitable organizations. There is a certain language and technique just like in any other kinds of sales. I hope to return back to this document and add more knowledge to my new path of helping create this vision in reality.
