My topic for the time being is word aversion. The ad I have selected really speaks to many different audiences. The first being just the general populous who appose abuse on women. Looking at this women who is covered, however seeing the bruise under her hijab. This invokes many different responses in people, some it would be pity, others anger, maybe even fear. Another group is the Arab women being abused, advertising that this is not something that can stay covered up forever. This ad comes from an organization called the Kind Khalid Foundation and their website is kkf.org.sa , a humanitarian organization organized in Saudi Arabia. This speaks volumes because of what the middle east has been known for in the recent years. The way this article relates to the concept of word aversion is there are many different responses that could be invoked. This semester I want to take some time and see how come some words invoke different emotions. Looking at the Ad there are a few words that come to mind that may fall under the definition of aversion, the first being abuse. When most people hear or even see abuse, they cringe. This aversion to the word can cause people to feel so deeply for this women, even make them want to help her in some way. This deep affection for her could cause this ad to trigger some type of emotion for her. Another aspect is the aversion to the word Muslim unfortunately. As an Arab American, I notice I am looking at a Muslim women. Just this alone will invoke many emotions. For some Americans, this may invoke an emotion of anger or fear because of how Muslims are portrayed in this country. In my opinion, this would not be the best Ad to use here because of that one reason. Some Americans may not even notice that she is being abused because all they may see is the fact that she is Muslim. Because of that racial profile, some people may not even care that she is being abused. Whatever personal philosophy or belief you stand by, this image will invoke some type of emotion in you, causing you to react in some type of way.
